In an interview with Guitar World, promoting his new album Crazy Times with the band The Circle, Sammy Hagar revealed his Van Helen’s favorite album, among other subjects.
Talking about Crazy Times and its legacy, the vocalist said : “When I think about it, I get goosebumps. I know it’s up there, and I have a feeling it will stand the test of time. Lyrically, I have no problem resisting because there is no garbage here.”
“Montrose’s first record is a big milestone in my life because it has passed this test of time. You know you’re in good shape when you start a career with a song like ‘Rock Candy’ ”, continued Hagar, before starting to talk about his time in Van Halen.
“For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge is my favorite Van Halen record. I think it’s even better than 5150″, Hagar said and explained, “I think it’s even better than
Hagar also revealed that there’s a Van Halen signature he wanted to incorporate into Crazy Times, which was to ensure that bassist Michael Anthony’s backing vocals were front and center.
“I want Mike to sound like he did on ‘Runnin’ With the Devil’ and ‘Top of the World,’” Hagar recalled. “And [o produtor] Dave [Cobb] said, ‘I don’t know, man. We’re not making it. Can you call [produtor do Van Halen] Ted [Templeman]?’ So I called Ted, he gave me his formula, we walked in, and boom, we had Mikey’s vocals. And with those vocals, we have an album that rivals Van Halen. I really believe that.”
